Casa Darvas – La Roche

Casa Darvas – La Roche is one of the most precious architectural jewels of Oradea, having been built between 1909 and 1912 by brothers László and József Vágó in the Art Nouveau-Secession  style. The stylish building is unique through its beauty and modernity, and could stand alongside the original European architectural creations of the early twentieth century.

The facade is rhymed with decorative buttons created from Zsolnay cermanics that have six distinct motifs. Their greenish-blue color with metallic reflections of enamel gives elegance and spetacle to the entire architectural ensemble.

A central element of the facade is the parapet balcony that is richly. The symbolic motifs are pine cones, symmetrical hearts and vegetal spirals entered in the equilateral triangle .. It is guarded by a character with statuary arms that includes a ceramic bowl decorated with star shapes, colored in the same range bright bluish-green.

A special attraction of the house is the stained glass windows and facades decorating both main rooms. The motifs are inspired by nature, especially in the world of plants and birds. The presence of women in medallions image gives an extra charm decorative composition. Other original features are preserved mosaic colored bands that mark, like bracelets of gold, the top and bottom of the semicircular columns on the windows.

The house is also very valuable for its hardware. The iron was modeled on a design that stylize the Viennese Secession vision of geometric plant motifs with symbolic meanings. The triangular motif of falling tulips, coiled vines, bulbs germination vertical bands are also found in the open inner courtyard on the parapet balcony.

Vintage interior
Stepping beyond the facade, the home gradually reveal treasures. The most spectacular decorations are stained glass. The first of valuable original pieces that welcomes the visitor is the stain glass window glazing of the hall downstairs. Upstairs we look toward a stained glass window decorated with flower stems that arise out of a pot while colorful birds peck them, and instead kept the original shape of the house. The bedroom offers a broad panorama, the north wall is entirely made up of four windows with monumental decoration which reaches maximum brightness as seen from inside. Stained glass windows are made up of pieces of colored glass mass and assembled a drawing made of strips of lead, which is the authentic technique of the old artisans.

Among the unique pieces of great value is counted lobby fountain decorated with geometric Zsolnay ceramics and two masks made of embossed brass, perforated with geometric cutouts that are specific to the Viennese Secession style. The Cremonese doorknobs and windows also present curiosity, all customized by the owner inscribed in a circular “DI” monogram, which demonstrates that the proposed interior design of the house was treated to the smallest detail. Defining as representative elements include Secession style stucco decorating the ceilings of all the rooms. Also remarkable is the living room ceiling, richly decorated with lush plant motifs.

The furniture in neo-rococo style, made from maple wood painted white was kept in the bedroom and includes several parts: four-poster bed, nightstands and dresser with three drawers decorated with molded and polished brass, a three doors wardrobe, ornate with branches that have fall foliage and flowers, a central door with polished crystal, a Venetian crystal mirror wall and exotic wood circular table with four arched legs and dresser with flat veneer of maple peas and chandelier with six arms with opalescent glass.

The kitchen retains the original furnishings with a cooker with decorative pavement tiles composed of white and blue geometric shapes, showing that the details of the room were not neglected. To complete the atmosphere, the floor has been decorated with antique furniture pieces, objects and paintings that together define modern style and refined life of the early twentieth century.
